She immigrated to the USA from her native Colombia as a child and grew up in the suburbs of Boston, MA where she completed her graduate education and training at William James College (formerly Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology).
Specialization
As part of her training, Dr. Cardenas worked in various clinical settings including:
- community health and mental health centers
- academic settings
- and a trauma clinic where she gained experience working with diverse client populations.
After completing her training and working in Massachusetts for several years, Dr. Cardenas moved to Stamford Connecticut where she directed counseling Spanish language services at one of the largest DV services agencies in Connecticut.
Strategies
Through her training in multicultural settings and in her work with domestic violence services, Dr. Cardenas developed a passion and expertise for working with multicultural and immigrant populations as well as working with victims of trauma. She has since focused much of her work on providing support for individuals:
- who are in transition
- who have experienced trauma
- and/or who are dealing with interpersonal conflict.
Dr. Cardenas moved to Austin in 2015 and established her private practice, Austin International Counseling, in 2016. In her current work she focuses largely on providing support for immigrant clients through individual therapy and immigration evaluations.
